Lighting work for NewKino Studio's 'Lumi'

Client: NewKino Studio

Year: 2025

Role: Lighting Artist

Software: Blender

Lumi is the new mascot for the creative production company NewKino Studio. I was brought on to light a one-minute short film unveiling and introducing the character.

Working closely with the CG lead, I helped bring the project to life in Blender, using lighting to shape mood, focus, and personality in every frame.

Lighting the lab came with its challenges, but I loved the process of bringing it to life. Subtle light details and carefully placed god rays added depth and drama, making the space feel dynamic and alive.

One of the first shots I lit for the project, this moment was all about evoking a sense of magic. The soft light of dawn breaking over the mountains brings a surreal tranquility to the scene. Paired with the crescent moon and Lumi and Iris zipping into space, I’m really proud of the dreamy, atmospheric tone this shot captures.

Using geometry nodes and a particle system to create the swirly particles around the DNA and a simple lighting set up + bloom to bring it together.

Added a 'cookie' to shape the light, I used a video texture to create the shape to add visual interest to the lasers.

Inspired by retro-futuristic cityscapes from classic 80s-90s anime, this shot is easily one of my favourites. The provided city model was massive, and I used pockets of light and volumetrics to create a sense of space and story within the environment.

Working with a team to make something come to life was a great learning experience. Having always loved working with light especially as a gaffer or cinematographer on set, this project felt like a full-circle moment. I got to be the digital gaffer, shaping mood and atmosphere through lighting in a fully CG world.

It was a lot of hardwork from a very talented group of people and I'm so fortunate to have been able to contribute to introducing Lumi to the world.
